One Month Down and 11 to Go!
The entire month of February is dedicated to two cat care topics – National Cat Health Month and National Pet Dental Health Month.
If you are like many cat owners who are lax about getting regular checkups for your feline friends, it’s a good time to get them in for a vet visit. By numbers alone, Americans have a love affair with cats. As house pets, they outnumber dogs: 82 million cats vs. 71 million dogs. But cats are the Rodney Dangerfield of pets – they often get no respect. Remember, cats can hide illness or pain, so millions don’t see a vet until they’re profoundly ill.
FEBRUARY 14TH is National Pet-Theft Awareness Day. Yes, there really are people out there who steal pets, as horrible as it is to think about.
FEBRUARY 20th – Today is Love Your Cat (Pet) Day! Bring your cat a special treat, have 2 or 3 more play sessions, or just give them more attention on National Love Your Cat (Pet) Day. Whatever you decide to do, spoil, and appreciate your cats!
FEBRUARY 22nd – Today the Japanese celebrate Cat Day, an informal holiday dedicated to cats, an animal they adore and are obsessed with! Japanese people seem to have a special fondness for them. Japan has one of the highest number of cats per capita in the world. Cat Day in Japan is known alternatively as “Nyan Nyan Nyan Day”. “Nyan” is the Japanese equivalent of “meow”, and “ni” is the Japanese word for number two. February 22 (written 22/2) is pronounced “ni ni ni”, which apparently resembles “nyan nyan nyan”. Probably, that is why February 22 became a cat-themed holiday.
FEBRUARY 25TH – Today is World Spay and Neuter Day! This day shines a spotlight on the power of affordable, accessible spay/neuter to save the lives of companion animals, community (feral and stray) cats, and street dogs who might otherwise be put down in shelters or killed on the street. The 25th annual World Spay Day is sponsored by HSUS.
