The Dog Days of Summer – What About Cats?
In the summer, Sirius, the dog star, rises and sets with the sun. The ancients named this period of time, dog days after the dog star. Today, dog days occur during the period between July 3 and August 11. Okay, so maybe cats shouldn’t be connected to hot and muggy stretches of weather.
So other than hot and humid weather, August is usually a pretty uneventful month. There are no holidays. It signals the end of school vacations. Nothing too exciting happens in August. Well I found some event dates that might give August a little bit of a reputation – at least for 2019.
August 1st – New York City – Cat Fashion Show / Algonquin Hotel
August 8th – International Cat Day is a full 24 hours of recognition and veneration of one of humanity’s oldest and most beloved pets. The festivities were put together for the first time in 2002 by IFAW, the International Fund for Animal Welfare, among other animal rights groups, to celebrate the most popular pet on the planet.
August 17th – Black Cat Appreciation Day – Because of superstitious beliefs in some cultures, black cats are sometimes associated with bad luck and, sadly, are more likely to be put to sleep or wait a long time to be adopted from shelters.
August 22nd – is Take your cat to the vet! day. It seems dog owners take their dogs to the vet way more than cat owners. Cats are good at hiding health issues so make an appointment today.
